Q. What is the difference between Yoga and Pilates?
A. Pilates and Yoga both use a series of controlled movements to reach the same goals. However, Pilates incorporates work on the Pilates equipment along with its full complement of mat work. The emphasis of the exercises is to strengthen the abdominal, improve posture, stabilize and lengthen the spine, improve balance and overall strength. And unlike many other training programs, Pilates works the whole body, emphasizing control, precision and concentration in both the mind and the body.
If you are unsure about which one will work best for you, try them both in conjunction. Pilates and Yoga complement each other, which is why at Evolutions Pilates studio, we offer them both. Achieve the flexibility from Yoga and maintain it from Pilates. Strengthen your core with Pilates and watch your balance and stability improve in Yoga. However, you can also advance on the mat and it will offer you a fantastic workout—you provide your own resistance and some clients find the mat exercises more challenging. Additionally, mat work is a great way to get prepared for some of the more difficult exercises done on the equipment. The group setting is also motivating and it is a cost effective way to add Pilates into your weekly routine!
Q. How often do I need to do this?
A. Consistency and commitment is the key to success in any fitness activity. To reap benefits from your hard work, incorporate Pilates at least two to three times in your workout routine.
