Pilates is one of the fastest growing fitness activities in America according to SGMA International, the trade association for sports equipment manufacturers. It is no longer an exercise program just for dancers. It is now one of the well known and sought after exercise programs of the 21st century. Movie stars such as Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Roberts and Jennifer Anniston are advocates of the discipline. So are athletes such as golfer Tiger Woods, basketball star Jason Kidd, pitcher Curt Schilling and offensive lineman Ruben Brown. Perhaps its popularity has something to do with results – as the inventor, Joseph Pilates said: "In ten sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 you will see the difference, and in 30 you will have a whole new body".

Pilates strengthens the abdominal, improve posture, stabilize and lengthen the spine, improve balance and overall strength. Unlike many other exercise programs, Pilates works the whole body, emphasizing control, precision and concentration in both the mind and the body.

Pilates' focus is on quality not quantity. The abdominal muscles, lower back and buttocks ("powerhouse") serve as the center of all movement, allowing the rest of the body to move freely allowing the focus to be on core stabilization which makes one stronger from the inside out. The low impact nature of Pilates makes it ideal for injury prevention and rehabilitation. Its six principles-concentration, control, centering, breathing, flow and precision train the body to move efficiently with minimal impact on the body. The balance between strength and flexibility creates a healthy, vigorous and symmetrical workout for all muscle groups resulting in a leaner, more balanced, and stronger body.

Due to its gentle, non-jarring movements, Pilates is one of the safest workouts that are suitable for all ages and fitness levels. A gentle workout for the injured, or an intense workout for the athlete, individually tailored programs in the Pilates Method can help you to achieve your fitness goals.
